From 1949 – 1951, Riverhead, Long Island was home to one of Suffolk County’s premier attractions, Riverhead Stadium (formerly Wivchar Stadium). Standing as Suffolk’s first stadium, it opened to great fanfare and high expectations. However, a whirlwind period of spectacles, missteps, and calamities led to the stadium’s premature closure.
