Each January millions of people around the United States gather to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and engage in a significant act of white-washing. Dr. King’s speech, now known as the “I Have a Dream” speech, is the centerpiece of many gatherings. The speech is revered for its beautifully poetic declaration of “A Dream” of a day when all will be judged by the content of the character, not the color of their skin. Except, that is not what the speech is really about! What was the speech (and the March on Washington) really about? Why is that not the focus of our celebrations? What does the answer tell us about how systemic racism operates and manages to defy good-faith efforts to defeat it? How can the lens of Non-Violent Communication help us to refocus attention on Dr. King’s actual core message?

Bathabile K. S. Mthombeni is a dynamic and gifted speaker, mediator, ombuds, and coach who strives to create unique and transformative experiences for her audiences and clients.
