Music at Co-Cath will perform a “concert plus” experience of Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine in honor of the feast of our Lady of Guadalupe “La Virgen de las Américas.” This multicultural, holiday
celebration will combine the exquisite sound of a baroque period orchestra and 14 singers.

As we do every year, retelling the story of the birth of Jesus by enacting the nativity, this performance of
Monteverdi’s timeless Vespers will also include a reenactment of La Virgen de Guadalupe’s miraculous
appearances to a humble and devoted Aztec man, Juan Diego. With short readings in both English and Spanish as our guide, our singers will transform into Juan Diego, La Virgin de Guadalupe, and others, to bring this story to life.

The audience will be invited to participate in the performance in different ways. One can either offer roses to
Juan Diego in his search or place them for La Virgen de Guadalupe. Also, written intentions will be collected,
in-person and digitally, to be present at the altar during the Guadalupe’s feast day Mass at The Co-Cathedral.

Our hope is to inspire audiences through the combination of Monteverdi’s masterpiece and this story of
perseverance in faith in which the Holy Mother takes a new name to connect to, and build a home for, her
indigenous people in the Americas. Making a kinder world that much more accessible to everyone.
