What is a Docent Volunteer?
Docent Volunteers are a vital part of the Museum’s operations and impact on the community. They bring artwork on view to life for museum visitors of all ages. Enthusiasm, a desire to learn, strong communication skills, and a passion for the arts are just a few of the valuable characteristics of an effective Docent. Docents come from many different backgrounds and experiences. A degree in art history, studio art, or a related field is NOT required. What is most important is to have a love of art, learning, and sharing with others!
Responsibilities include: Welcoming guests, answering visitor questions about exhibitions, engaging visitors in conversation about artwork on view, leading tours, and assisting during events.
Skills required: Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Interest in and passion for the arts and speaking with the public.
Schedule: Docents must volunteer for at least two 2-hour shifts each month and attend meetings, which are held once per month on Mondays, 10:30 am-12 pm. A six-month training program must be completed prior to becoming part of the team.
