Great Neck Library Celebrating 100 years of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald on Sunday April 6

Join us on Sunday, April 6, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for a Gatsby-Inspired Celebration at the Main Library featuring 1920’s themed performances, memorabilia activities and more!

Learn to Dance the Charleston from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at the Great Neck Community Room

Come and learn to dance the Charleston. Dress as your usual self or in your best flapper style and bring a partner or friend. All ages and abilities are welcome. Join dance instructor Brooke Di Spirito to learn how to dance the Charleston and other Gatsby-era dances.  Brooke Di Spirito is a ballet dancer, playwright, lyricist, director, and choreographer, in addition to being a member of the performing group, the Sparrows.

Jazz, Swing and Big Band with the New Vintage Orchestra from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Great Neck Community Room:

Stay after the dance lesson for our swing band performance at 2 p.m. and try out your new moves! The New Vintage Orchestra bubbles with an unparalleled energy and charisma that is sure to keep dancers going all afternoon. Formed by trumpeter Brian Lewis in August of 1992, the band puts forth an incredibly diverse range of musical talent. Featured is female vocalist Doris Anne Lewis, singing the hits of Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, Dianne Schuur, and many other swing singers. All ages are welcome.

Gatsby-Era Automobiles Show from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Main Library Outside Lower Level

Check out a display of Model A Fords from the Model A Ford Club of Long Island and learn about these cars from the late 1920s and early 1930s. Thanks to Destination Great Neck, the Model A Ford Club of LI, and the Corso Family for helping make our event a success!

 

Gatsby Style Games, Colorings, and Crafts from 1:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. at the Main Library lower Level

Try your hand at a few popular 1920 games. We’ll have dominoes, chess, go fish and more! There will also be some 1920 themed coloring pages and crafts.

 

1920s Inflation Guessing Game and Display from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Small Multipurpose Room

Win a big prize for giving your best guess at how much some household items costs in the 1920s! Check out advertisements, newspaper clippings, and more from the era!

Laser Engrave Gatsby Day with STEM Lab from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the STEM Lab

The STEM lab is making Gatsby Day Laser Engraving. Stop by and take home a commemorative key-chain with you, laser-engraved with elegant Great Neck Library and Gatsby-inspired motifs.
