Great Neck Historical Society: History of the Great Neck School District

On Thursday, March 27, Great Neck School Board Trustee Donna Peirez will present a program about the fascinating history of our school district that has been recognized nationally as a lighthouse district, a leader in excellence.
Ms. Peirez’ s background is unique in scope as she was an active parent during her children’s enrollment, serving as President of United Parent Teacher Council with a knack for getting other parents excited about being involved. She taught for 11 years at Community Nursery School and she taught at Lakeville School Elementary School for 28 years where she was beloved.
In addition to hands-on involvement in the day-to-day work of education, she served on various policy advisory committees broadening her understanding of complex administrative issues. The above is just a brief summary of her experience and knowledge base.
Ms. Peirez will take us through the public schools’ history starting with the humble beginnings in 1814 when the Woolley’s Brook School opened, going through the tumultuous years of the 1960s when civil rights was a roiling issue, and through the changes that technology has brought, both positive and challenging.
The community is invited attend the program at the Great Neck House, 14 Arrandale Avenue on March 27 at 7:30 p.m.
GNHS President Jay Marcus says, “ We are excited to host what we believe will be an exciting story of how our community came to offer such great educational opportunities for our children as well as life-long learners in the Adult Ed program.”
