Folk Traditions and Origins of Valentine’s Day
The practice of sending valentines originated in the Middle Ages, with boys drawing the names of girls at random. This custom was combated by priests, around 1600, apparently by replacing it with a religious custom of girls drawing the names of apostles. In the UK, “Jack” Valentine leaves sweets for children at their door. We will discuss some of these varied traditions. SCCC professor Danielle DiMauro will be the lecturer. No registration required.
