Dress Up at Sea

Join the museum (in costume, if you wish!) for this family-friendly program exploring the history of sailors dressing up at sea, where costumes have a long history of providing crew members with entertainment.  Learn how mariners, including whalers and Navy crews, held “line-crossing ceremonies” when crossing the equators where some crew members dressed as underwater queens and mermaids. Set sail with drag artist and mermaid, Bella Noche, for a unique Drag Story Hour including maritime origins of mermaids and reading mythical stories. Decorate a ship wheel ornament to keep for your own journeys.
