Dove/Torr Cottage Open House

Enjoy exclusive access to the historic home of American modernist artists Helen Torr and Arthur Dove during this open house event! Located at 30 Centershore Road, Centerport, NY, just several miles from the Museum, the cottage was the residence of Arthur Dove and Helen Torr from 1938 to 1946. When Dove passed away in 1946, Torr continued to live in the cottage until her death in 1967. The Heckscher Museum of Art is proud to preserve and steward this historic property and open the interior of the property to the public during this special event.
At 12:30, enjoy a special reading of poems inspired by the life and work of Dove and Torr by award-winning poet Jesse Curran. Curran’s recent book project,The Space Between Two Necks: Poems and Essays, turns to the north shore of Long Island to explore the metaphorical resonance of local landmarks, using landscapes and other works by Arthur Dove and Helen Torr as its centerpiece.
Learn more about the story of Arthur Dove and Helen Torr from Curatorial staff and docent volunteers throughout the day. Observe artist Edward Lee as he paints en plein air. For years, Ed has used local historical buildings as inspiration for his artwork. Feel free to join in and sketch along. We will have a selection of painting and drawing materials available for both adults and kids. And don’t forget to also explore the Dove/Torr Cottage Soundwalk using your phone in the Museum’s digital guide in the Bloomberg Connects app!
