Celebrate Kwanzaa

Brooklyn Children’s Museum is celebrating its 15th annual Kwanzaa celebration, presented in partnership with Brooklyn-based Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation. Join us for 5 days of live music, dance demonstrations, spoken-word presentations, art-making, food, and more!

This year’s festival explores the ideas behind the 7 principles of Kwanzaa by taking visitors on a journey back in time to the 1960s where they will explore the cultures of different locations around the American South and Northeast.

Each day of Celebrate Kwanzaa highlights a new destination that influenced the creation of Kwanzaa. Join us on an adventure beginning with the Creole of New Orleans, moving east to the Gullah people of Charleston, north to the deeply rooted sounds of Nashville, down to the soul of Atlanta, and finally to the Black excellence of Harlem.

Each day explores African American artistic traditions of a new time and place:

• Hear music performances, including a jazz quartet, percussion ensemble, marching band, and more.
• Participate in dance demonstrations, including Lindy Hop, the Charleston, stepping, and more.
• Experience child-accessible readings of works from the Black Arts Movement, including theater programs that highlight the works of James Baldwin, Lorraine Hansberry, Maya Angelou, Amiri Baraka, and Gwendolyn Brooks.
• Plus hands-on art-making, food-making workshops, and more.
