August Wilson’s Fences Presented by Hempstead High School
Fences take place in 1957, a landmark year for the Civil Rights Movement and a time when much of the Black community felt caught between an oppressive past and the possibility of a brighter future. Fences follow the story of Troy Maxson, an African American father and a husband who desperately needs to provide for his family. Troy is a man with “something to say about everything” and whose opinions and overbearing personality build emotional “fences” as he tries to pursue the American Dream. In 2023, the hard-working and talented students from Hempstead High School, under the direction of Theatrical Director Timothy Dolan and Assistant Director Dr. Ashton Bell, are leading the way for a powerful, moving Fences performance.
