Antoni Jurkiewicz, a self-taught artist, was born in 1949 to poor European immigrants in a rural Northeast farmhouse. Although he had fond memories of his childhood, he left home at age 16 to pursue his passion for art. He moved to NY and began painting earnestly while soaking up all he could at the many museums of NYC. He loved Impressionism and Figurative Expressionism. Several years later, he went to Medical School and had a successful career as a General Surgeon. Throughout his surgical career, he continued to paint whenever time allowed.

Given his lack of professional training, Dr. Jurkiewicz was naturally drawn to Expressionism, a form of art that invites spontaneity and emotion. In the past, the subject of his art was unplanned, with a focus on color and form. The characters usually just appear from the paint, often from the brushstrokes as he worked. These days, there is a bit more planning involved. Now the characters are usually related to people in his life and places and things he has seen. The best ones always have something new to say while the viewer never gets tired of them. Although he defines his style of work as Figurative Expressionism, the term Colorist may be technically more accurate. This exhibition is a snapshot from his body of work, including paintings from the 70s through the present.
